How Often Should You Take Your Pet to the Vet?

General guidance on wellness visits for puppies, adults, and senior pets, and how to make each appointment count.

Visit frequency changes with life stage

Healthy pets still benefit from regular checkups, because animals hide illness well and problems are cheaper and easier to treat when caught early.

Your veterinarian will recommend a schedule for your specific pet, but the general pattern looks like this.

  • Puppies and kittens: several visits in the first months for vaccines and growth checks
  • Healthy adults: at least one wellness visit per year
  • Senior pets: often twice a year, sometimes with added blood work
  • Pets with ongoing conditions: as advised by your vet

Make every appointment count

Arriving with an organised history means less is forgotten and more time is spent on your pet. Bring a summary of symptoms, current medications, and any changes since the last visit.

Track between visits

Small changes in weight, appetite, energy, or toileting are easy to miss day to day but obvious over weeks. Recording them gives your vet real data instead of guesswork.
