Pet First Aid Basics Before You Reach the Vet

First aid buys time, it is not a cure

The purpose of pet first aid is to keep your pet as safe and stable as possible while you get to a veterinarian. It is never a substitute for professional treatment.

Your first action in any serious situation should be to call an emergency vet for guidance specific to what is happening.

Keep a basic kit ready

Having supplies in one place saves precious time.

• Gauze, non-stick bandages, and adhesive tape
• Blunt-tipped scissors and clean towels
• A digital thermometer and disposable gloves
• Your vet and nearest emergency clinic numbers
• A card with your pet's key medical details

Know what not to do

Do not give human medications, induce vomiting, or apply home remedies unless a veterinary professional tells you to, as some of these can cause serious harm. When in doubt, transport your pet safely and call ahead so the clinic is ready.
